Market women and traders in the Tamale metropolis have embarked on a peaceful demonstration to register their displeasure with activities of the mayor.
According to them, the mayor, Musa Superior, is denying them their daily bread through actions they described as harassment.
A market woman, Hajia Fati, alleged that some members of a taskforce known as ‘Mayor’s boys,’ collect huge sums of money from them to allow them ply their trade at some areas and sections of the streets.
She added that they are sometimes harassed by the taskforce and forced to pay the monies lest they (taskforce members) would have their (traders’) wares confiscated.
Abdullah Yahaya, secretary of the concerned youth of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who joined the market women in the demonstration expressed, “We are appealing to the regional minister and the regional leadership of the party to call the mayor to order to aid implement the good policies of President Akufo-Addo and the government and stop terrorizing market women and denying them of their daily bread.”
Some of the youth who spoke to Daily Guide indicated that the attitude of the mayor had made it difficult for the party faithful and residents of the metropolis to share their concerns with him.
Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Solomon Boar, who received the petition on behalf of the regional minister, assured the protesters that their concerns would be channeled to the appropriate quarters and addressed.
Mr Solomon Boar urged them to remain calm while their concerns were being looked at. He commended the market women and the youth group for the peaceful manner in which they went about the demonstration.
