Editorial:Bring These Erring Soldiers To Order!

A group of three soldiers are reported to have descended on some villagers at Kete Krachi in the Volta region, beating them to smithereens and making away with three cows belonging to the villagers. The soldiers, deployed in the area under Operation Going Gong, were said to have descended on the villagers and made away with their cows on the alleged instructions of the paramount chief of the area. The latest reports of military brutalities come on the back of many such recent reports, and tend to paint the military in a most unfavourable light. As an institution, the Daily Searchlight has the highest of respect for our soldiers and the military establishment. We know that the institution and personnel play an invaluable role in ensuring our safety and security as a people and nation. However, the many reports of brutalities perpetrated by members of the military have gone a long way to create an aura of fear in the minds of the citizenry about the military. Unfortunately, some soldiers are behaving like occupation forces instead of assistants of the citizenry that they are supposed to be. From reports of rape to murder to assault, this nation has witnessed too many reports of brutalities by people in uniform to be allowed to be swept under the carpet. In the light of the recent claim by the president that he would not tolerate impunity, we call on government and the military authorities to ensure, with all speed that this latest report of brutality is investigated to the fullest, and the culprits identified and punished. The president has been offered a great opportunity to demonstrate that he is indeed opposed to impunity of whatever form as he said, and we shall be waiting to hear what actions are taken about this particular instance of military brutality and impunity!
