It has now been established that the six suspects, who were freed by armed robbers during the attack on the Kwabenya Police Station last Sunday, which led to the death of Inspector Emmanuel Ashilevi, were hardened armed robbers.
According to information, only one of the suspects was involved in stealing.
Reports said four of the suspects were remanded into custody by courts while three others were about to be arraigned before court by the police.
The six armed robbers have been identified as Dickson Ofori, 24, Chibuzor Akwabu, 34, a Nigerian, Emmanuel Kotey, 21, Prince Osei, 27, Kofi Darko, 21, Atta Kwadwo, 20 and Edem Rockson, 32.
Dickson Ofori, 24
Ofori, according to police reports, single-handedly attacked a house at Ashongman and shot two of the occupants.
He allegedly stormed the house on December 6, 2017 around 3:30am and robbed the victims of items such as laptops, mobile phones and WIFI device.
Two occupants of the house raised an alarm when he was about to attack another victim but Ofori fired gunshots indiscriminately.
Some angry residents, who came to the rescue of the victims, disarmed him and later handed him over to the police.
The items and the weapon were recovered by the police.
He was remanded into police custody to reappear on January 26, 2018.
Chibuzor Akwabu
Akwabu, in the company of seven others, reportedly attacked Atomic Gas Filling Station on November 10, 2017.
However, police received information on their activities and rushed to the scene.
The armed robbers, upon seeing the police, opened fire.
The police returned fire and in the process Akwabu was hit by a bullet.
He was later captured and sent to the police hospital for treatment.
Upon his discharge from hospital, police arraigned him before court and he was remanded to into police custody to reappear on January 17, 2018.
However, on the said date, the suspect was sent to court but the judge was absent.
The police planned to arraign him before court at a later date but he escaped from cells.
Emmanuel Kotey
Kotey on December 20, 2017 hired the services of an Okada rider from Abom Junction near Pokuase to Katapor area near Amasaman.
Midway through the journey, he allegedly sprayed pepper into the eyes of the rider and snatched the motorbike from him.
Kortey later took the motorbike to Asamankese in the Eastern Region and was arrested through intelligence on December 28, 2017.
He was remanded to reappear on January 25, 2018.
Edem Rockson, 32
Suspect Edem allegedly stole a Ford salon car from a shop at Kwabenya.
Until his arrest by the Kwabenya police, the suspect was on remand at the Nungua Police Station for committing a similar offence.
He usually enrolls as an apprentice at mechanic shops.
In the course of his work, he gets access to keys of vehicles that have been brought to the shop by the owners for repair works.
He usually steals the keys to the car and while everybody is away, he takes the vehicle to a hiding place.
Edem used this tactic to steal a Ford vehicle from his master at Kwabenya and sold it at a cost of GHC2,000.
The Kwabenya Police had information that the suspect had been arrested for a similar offence at Nungua.
He was to appear in court on January 24, 2018.
Suspects Osei, Darko and Kwadwo are friends who were in possession of a long cutter screw driver, pistol and some deadly implements at the Kwabenya Roundabout in the wee hours of November 17, 2017.
Police reports indicated that the Kwabenya police received a tip-off that the three friends had planned to attack a victim at Kwabenya and apprehended them.
The aforementioned items were concealed in a bag.
They were remanded into custody to reappear on January 24, 2018.
Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Commander DCOP George Alex Mensah, when contacted, said efforts were underway to get the perpetrators arrested.
He urged the public to volunteer information that would lead to their arrest.
