Minister Lauds KEEA Assembly For Improved Sanitation

Mr Kwamena Duncan, the Central Regional Minister, has lauded the Komenda-Edina-Aguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipal Assembly for their efforts to keep the municipality clean.

He commended all stakeholders, particularly Mr Appiah Korang, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), for complementing the national sanitation campaign efforts by striving to improve the sanitation situation in the Municipality.

Mr Duncan was speaking at Elmina on Thursday during an engagement with traders at the Elmina Market, drivers and the public to enlighten them on Government policies and solicit their views to aid national development in the municipality.

The meeting afforded other Assembly's decentralized departments such as the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Narcotic Control Board (NACOB) among others the opportunity to explain their policies and schooled the public on pertinent issues such as food safety, drug abuse, bleaching among others.

Mr Duncan said good environmental practices had tremendous implications in terms of revenue mobilisation for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and was a critical factor for effective development and improved standards of living.

The Regional Minister entreated the public to complement the government’s effort at providing quality health services by maintaining environmental and personal cleanliness.

He said cholera was mostly about observing personal hygiene, and it is important to look at the diverse angles of the outbreak to know its causes and know how best to bring the situation under control.

He re-echoed his office's determination to sustain the campaign to create awareness on the debilitating effects of insanitary environment, open defecation and personal hygiene to promote the well-being of Ghanaians and appealed to the residents to be law-abiding and assist the Assembly to enforce sanitation bye-laws to avoid the spread or outbreak of diseases.

Mr Duncan urged the communities, traditional and religious leaders to play key roles by maintaining safe water and sanitation practices, organise community outreach and awareness campaigns on personal hygiene, especially hand washing.

Mr Appiah Korang, the KEEA MCE, appealed to the public to support Government's efforts at improving the living conditions of the people adding that the Assembly would soon provide lighting at the Elimina market and also get rid the area of unauthorized traders and hawkers who have taken over the streets.
