A four-day photographic and video exhibition to highlight the dangers of environmental pollution, global warming and the need for alternative energy sources, has been held at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi. The French Embassy in Accra and the French Ministry of Ecology and Education jointly organised the programme. "Nature and Sustainable Development" was the theme for the programme. Mr Julien Dal Bosco, Kumasi Centre Manager of the Alliance Francaise, said the exhibition was necessitated by the increasing pollution and degradation of the environment that had resulted in a surge of natural disasters and threatening the existence of mankind. The United Nations (UN) inter-governmental panel on climate change estimates that global average temperature has risen by about 0.7 degree Celsius within the past century. This has been attributed to excessive emission of carbon dioxide produced by human activities including fossil fuel combustion and deforestation. Mr Bosco stressed the need to increase reliance on alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power. He said additionally, it was imperative to embark on intensive afforestation to cut down green house emission to ensure sustainable development. Mr Stuart Gold, an Environmentalist, urged scientists and technocrats to collaborate with corporate organisations to re-cycle plastic waste to address the havoc to the environment.
