Human Rights Reporters Network condemns attack on journalists

The Ghana Human Rights Reporters Network, (GHRRN), has called for an independent investigation into the attack on some journalists at the "Brong-Ahafo @ 50 Awards" ceremony in Sunyani last Saturday. A statement signed by Mr Fred Tettey Amoako, the Brong Ahafo Regional President of the Network called on the Inspector General of Police, the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister to intervene and ensure justice was done. "As human rights journalists we see this negative development as an affront to press freedom and the rights of the individual journalists, who are performing their legitimate duties as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution. "We want to condemn this negative trend where journalists are attacked without any justification in recent times." The Network described the action as barbaric, undemocratic, uncivilized and unacceptable and thereby call on all law abiding Ghanaians to join the them in condemning the act. It called on the organisers of the awards ceremony, the National Democratic Congress, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive and all those, who have been linked to the incident, to render an unqualified apology to the victims. "We believe that an attack on journalists is an attack on freedom of speech and expression," the statement added.
