Ghana Cant Be America Overnight!

As pressure begins mounting on constituency Chairmen of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the national capital over the demolishing of illegal structures, the constituency heads have reminded the Accra Mayor, Dr Alfred Vanderpuije, that Ghana is not America, saying even in America, demolishing of properties were done with some humane face. The party men said, even though they agree with the Mayor on the decongestion exercise in the national capital, they were not happy with the indiscriminate manner the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) handling the exercise especially during this period of the Christmas festivities. Most worrying aspect of the exercise, they said, is that now a section of the AMA Task Force members have arrogated to themselves the power to demolish structures anywhere in Accra without the knowledge of the Assembly or the Mayor and in the process are demanding huge sums of money from the Traders and owners of the structures. Those who are unable to offer anything to the Task Force are subjected to daily harassment with instance where some structures containing goods were set on fire by the AMA Task Force. We must keep the national capital beautiful and less congested but whether we like it or not, the worried Constitunecy Chairmen said, these women make a living by trading on the streets and we cannot stop them by dirving them out of business in the name of beautification; the AMA can find a more humane way of ensuring that they are removed from the streets but their businesses are not disrupted.
