District Assemblies urged to build kindergartens

The Eastern Regional Director of the Department of Children, Mr Anthony Dontoh, has appealed to district assemblies to build more kindergartens to support early childhood development in the region. He said kindergartens provide good foundation for children and that regions that lack the required number of kindergartens perform poorly at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Mr Dontoh was speaking at an orientation workshop for District Assemblies on Early Childhood Care and Development in Koforidua at the weekend. It was attended by District and Municipal Chief Executives in the region and representatives of district assemblies. Mr Dontoh called on the assemblies to adopt inter-sector approach in the implementation of early childhood development and care. The Akuapem North District Director of Education, Mr Alfred Osei-Kofi, appealed to district assemblies to include teachers' bungalows when constructing school blocks, especially in the rural areas. He said when teachers have accommodation in the rural areas it enables them to spend more time with the pupils and also serve as role models. Mr Osei-Kofi appealed to district assemblies to offer scholarships to needy but brilliant students in their areas to encourage more students to be interested in furthering their education.
