Ghana@50 Probe: Prosecution awaits officials!

The Presidential Commission which probed the Ghana@ 50 celebrations on Wednesday, December 23, submitted its final report to President Mills at the Castle Osu. The committee recommended the prosecution of some public officials in the previous administration for misappropriating funds voted for the celebration of Ghana�s 50th birthday in 2007. Others who utilized funds without delivering the required services, per the recommendations of the Justice Douse led committee, may also be made to refund monies to the state. The Commission, which commenced its public hearings on Thursday July 23 was given 90 days to complete its work but it took an additional six weeks to complete the work. Principal actor- Chairman of the National Planning Committee and ex Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani and the CEO of the erstwhile Ghana@ 50 Secretariat, Dr. Wereko-Brobby appeared before the commission. In the heat of the inquest Chairman of the Commission, Justice Duose had issued a fiat for all Regional Ministers and DMCE�s to appear, failure of which the BNI will hound them. Upon receipt of the report on Monday, President Mills assured Ghanaians that his administration will study the recommendations carefully and act accordingly. ��as we go through the report, I want to assure you that your recommendations are going to be studied with all seriousness and whatever action has to be taken will be taken without fear or favour.� He said. The Commission was established by the President on June 1, under Article 278 Clause 1(a) of the Constitution and inaugurated by Vice President John Dramani Mahama on June 17. Members of the Commission included Mr. Osei Tutu Prempeh, Former Auditor-General and Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong, a Legal practitioner. The Commission in the course of the public hearings took submissions and petitions from the district assemblies, regional co-ordinating councils, private entities, service providers, technocrats, construction firms, consultants, the Ghana@50 Secretariat and the Office of the Chief of Staff. In all the commission took submissions from 238 witnesses, who were directly or indirectly involved in the 50th Independence anniversary celebration of Ghana. Follow the Ghana@50 events here >>
