The Police at Kasoa in the Central Region have begun screening the suspected Internet fraudsters and drug dealers they arrested last Wednesday in a swoop at Kasoa and its surrounding communities.
The exercise is to pave the way for the police to establish the identity of the suspects, some of whom are foreign nationals.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Kasoa Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr David Agyemang Adjem, said immediately after the screening, the embassies of countries of the suspects would be notified and their cases referred to the Ghana Immigration Service.
“The remaining Ghanaian nationals will then be sent to the court for prosecution,” he said.
Last Wednesday, the Kasoa police arrested 101 suspected Internet fraudsters and drug dealers believed to be the masterminds of major criminal operations at Kasoa and its surrounding communities.
The suspects, including foreign nationals, were apprehended in separate swoops at Obom, Akweley, Adade and Gomoa Nyanyano.
During a search at their hideouts, the police retrieved one pump action gun with live cartridges, 126 laptops, 40 mobile phones, nine passports, Internet modems, unspecified amount of money and 11 wrappers of Indian hemp.
Mr Adjem said: “As soon as the screening is completed, we will proceed with the next phases of our investigation, which is prosecution.”
He said Kasoa was being turned into an Internet fraud centre, where many young people from different parts of the country converged to undertake their criminal operations.
He added that the police would continue to undertake such swoops until crime was reduced in Kasoa and its surrounding communities.
“We are currently using every means possible to deal with crime at Kasoa and we will stop at nothing,” he added.
