Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, President of ECOWAS Commission, has advised the people of the Nanumba traditional area in the Northern Region to stop spending their resources on the procurement of weapons and rather invest in the education of their children.
Stressing the importance of education, he cautioned that no meaningful development could take place in the area without the contribution of well-educated people.
Speaking here on Saturday at the Nanumba Youth Association (NYA) congress, which was on the theme �Our culture, our unity�. Dr Chambas who hails from the area said education was basic for development and that it was only prudent that the people assist their children to get access to quality tuition.
Dr Ibn Chambas� admonition against acquisition of fire arms is against the background of the protracted Namumba chieftaincy dispute in which the main protagonists have been spending huge sums of money on arms and ammunition to out-do each other. He urged traditional rulers and other opinion leaders in area to help find a lasting solution to the chieftaincy problem which he noted was scaring away potential investors.
The Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing. Alhaji Iddi Shani assured the people of government�s commitment to tar roads in the area and hinted that work on some of them would commence soon.
He also announced that the government was working feverishly to address the water problem in the Bimbilla township and surrounding communities.
The president of the Nanumba Youth Association, Dr Tohir Hafiz Adam, condemned the recent animosity and acrimony that had engulfed the area due to the chieftaincy dispute.
He therefore, called on especially the youth to bury their differences and forge ahead in unity, stressing �the earlier we unite and push the development agenda of this area forward the better for us all.�
