EC Commissioners Removal: NDC Must Bow Down Their Heads In Shame - Sekondi MP

Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Agyapa Mercer has lambasted the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the party's press conference on Thursday regarding the dismissal of EC Chairperson Charlotte Osei and her two Deputies.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, in a statement signed by the Minister for Information Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, removed Madam Charlotte Osei together with her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwa with immediate effect.

The President's action was premised on recommendations by a Committee set up by the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo "pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution, to investigate separate complaints brought against the three persons by Ghanaian citizens, recommended their removal from office" and asked them to hand over their respective schedules to the Director for Human Resource and General Services of the EC.

The NDC found the President's move disturbing and held a press conference saying "we learn with shock and sadness the decision of President Akufo-Addo to terminate the appointments of EC Chair and her two deputies . . . we demand almost immediately that they must give us reasons for which they think that the Chairperson and her two deputies should be removed from office. The attempt and the fear for which reason they have set out to remove an arbiter of our elections so that they can rig the 2020 elections”.

Addressing the NDC on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme, Lawyer Agyapa Mercer wondered why the party would have qualms over the removal of the EC Chairperson and her Deputies when they're seeking the votes of Ghanaians because they believe the NDC is a better government.

He questioned why would the NDC "instigate picking arms" just because Madam Charlotte Osei has been asked to vacate her office following allegations of her involvement in a misdemeanor and corruption.

He asked the NDC to "bow down your heads in shame”.
