Mr. Charles Osei Assibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), has said Ghana is ready to host the rest of Africa in the upcoming Africa Armwrestling Championship slated for the Hathramani Sports Hall from 26–29 July, 2018 in Accra.

Mr Assibey, who made this known in an interview with GNA sports said nine countries have so far confirmed their participation, adding that they were expecting more by the close of the week.

“So far nine countries have shown their interest in the competition by submitting their contingent list. But we are expecting about 17 countries.

“About eight more countries have promised to confirm their participation by the end of the week, so we are waiting on them,” he added.

According to Mr Assibey, the championship, would be great opportunity for Ghana, to showcase the rich culture of Accra and also make known the various tourist sites, as well as increase the interest of Armwrestling in Ghana.

Mr Assibey called on the general public and corporate Ghana to come on board to help sell and promote Ghana in a positive way and to show the rest of Africa and the world, what Ghana can do.

“There are a few challenges but we are putting up our best to fix the Hathramani Sports Hall at the Accra Sports Stadium, which needs a bit of touch up to meet international standards for the competition.

“Sponsorship has been very difficult because the economy is tight and cooperate Ghana is finding it difficult to invest in not just sports but other events as well.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports has indicated their support for the championship and we are grateful to them as well as to other corporate bodies like Kofikrom pharmacy, TT Brothers, Erata Hotel and Accra Metropolitan Assembly for providing their support to the Armwrestling Federation so far,” he added.

The championship under the slogan ‘Team work makes the Dream’ would be graced by Mircea Simionescu Simicel, General Secretary, who would be in Ghana about two days before the start of the Championship.
