General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the death of the former Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah Arthur left him confused.

He says it has not been easy for him as the general secretary of the party for the past few days.

Speaking on Okay Fm's Ade Akye Abia Programme, the NDC scribe explained that a solemn memorial service is being held in honor of the late vice president today at 3pm.

The party is collaborating with family to ensure a successful memorial and funeral service. 

The general secretary who was away in switzerland to attend to other party meetings says he was left very devastated when he returned to hear of the death of the former vice president.

"The former vice president was a very good friend. We have known each other for a very long time. We had some personal times and these are very quiet times for me", he said somberly.

"The party currently has no plans for him, we are just allowing the family and the state to carry out the official funeral arrangements in his honour" he added.

Meanwhile, all party activities have been put on hold until further notice.

Former Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur died on Friday morning at age 67.

Sources say late Kwesi Amissah-Arthur collapsed at Airforce Gym during a workout session and was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital but died shortly on arrival.

About Amissah-Arthur

Before becoming Veep in August 2012, he was Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2009 to 2012.

From 1983 to 1986, Amissah-Arthur served as a special assistant to the Secretary of Finance and Economic Planning, Kwesi Botchwey under the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) government.

He also served as the Deputy Secretary for Finance in the PNDC government from February 1986 to March 1993.

From April 1993, he continued as the Deputy Minister for Finance in the under the Fourth Republic’s first government until March 1997.

Mr. Amissah-Arthur, 67, was appointed as Governor of the Bank of Ghana in October 2009 by then-President John Atta Mills.

He held that position until August 6, 2012, when he became Vice-President of Ghana following the death of Atta Mills.

He was survived by a wife and two children.
