Prospective vehicle buyers have been urged to check particulars of vehicles they want to purchase at any office of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Customs Division before effecting payment.

          This would help avoid the buying of stolen vehicles which have not been properly cleared by Custom of meeting all tax obligations.

          Miss Doris Agbetsise, a member of the GRA’s legal team, gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a two-day seminar for Customs officials and stakeholders in Tema on the Custom Act 2015 (ACT 891) and related issues.

          Miss Agbetsise said “to be on the safer side, take the documents from the seller and go to the nearest Customs office to check if it was cleared through the system”.

          She added that failure to do so could lead to the impoundment of the vehicle when in use, and a penalty imposed noting that the vehicle would only be released after the payment of the fine and the needed taxes.

          She indicated that vehicles were like human beings and therefore every one of them had their date of manufacture and identity and could easily be traced.

          The GRA legal team member stated that accident vehicles imported into Ghana would attract the same taxes as ascribed to a new car of the same brand adding that the tax element was based on a standardized value.
