A Member of Parliament (MP) in the First Republic, Madam Lucy Anin, has described the appointments of both Mrs Jean Mensa as the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) and Mrs Mary Chinery-Hesse as the Chancellor of the University of Ghana as an advancement of the country’s democracy.

Lauding the move, she said every patriotic citizen should be proud of the appointments, especially women.

  Madam Anin made this known when she paid a visit to the offices of the Daily Graphic in Accra on Monday.

The President’s appointments

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last Wednesday swore in Mrs Mensa as the new Chairperson of the EC to take over from the Charlotte Osei-led commission.

Mrs Mensa will be assisted by  Dr Eric Bossman Asare and the former Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission, Mr Samuel Tettey.

A corporate lawyer, Mrs Adwoa Asuama Abrefa, was also sworn in as a member of the commission.

The President also swore in Mrs Chinery-Hesse as the 10th Chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG), Legon.

Ghana great

Madam Anin indicated that the experiences and knowledge acquired by Mrs Mensa and Mrs Chinery-Hesse would catapult the country into higher heights, making the country great.

“They are going to make the country rich with their experience and knowledge. So far as I know, these two people are going to make the country great,” she stated.

She expressed admiration about women being given opportunity to run affairs in such offices, saying that was the way forward.

Madam Anin urged Ghanaians to throw their weight behind both women and give them the necessary support to make them succeed.

“I am so proud that women are given the chance to run affairs at such heights.

 It is important we give them the needed support. We have to pray for them so they succeed,” she averred.
