EDITORIAL: Atta-Mills Is Not A Magician

It is natural for every Ghanaian to want to assess the performance of President Mills and his government after a year in office. Unfortunately, however, some of the assessments that have been churned out are really ridiculous. In the anti-NDC media, one can hear of very funny assessments that make one want to puke. An NPP social commentator, speaking on a radio station yesterday said since not all the deprived school children have been supplied with free school uniforms this year, President Mills has failed to deliver. It is very important for all to understand that President Mills has a four-year mandate to rule Ghana, not one. A thorough assessment of how he has performed would at the end of day be based on his four years in office and not his first only. It is instructive to note that some of the bashers of President Mills are accusing him of failing to fix in one year things that President Kufuor could not fix in his whole eight years in office. Do they think that he is a magician? There is no gain saying that in spite of all the difficulties, the government has fared rather well in all fronts, especially the economic and agriculture sectors as well as the fight against corruption and crime juxtaposed to that of the Kufuor government. To measure this success, we should not only look at where he has reached but also where he started from.
