Reduce Special Petroleum Tax To Better The Lives Of Ghanaians - NPP MP

NPP Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Hon. Andrew Agyapa Mercer, has asked the government to intervene in the recent hike in fuel prices to help alleviate the economic pressures on Ghanaians, particularly petrol consumers.

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" to host Kwami Sefa Kayi, Hon. Agyapa Mercer noted that since the inception of the Akufo-Addo led government, there has been a significant boost in the development of the country but would appeal for a further reduction in Special Petroleum Tax (SPT).

Fuel prices shot up recently despite several attempts by the government to reduce taxes in the country.

Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu at a press conference weeks ago explained that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has since assuming power cut down the Special Petroleum Tax twice.

According to him, Ghanaians would have paid about GHC5.50 per litre for fuel had the Akufo-Addo government not intervened to mitigate the price hike.

This notwithstanding, Hon. Agyapa is pleading further with the government to put measures in place to ameliorate the lives of petrol users.

To him, the call for a reduction in petrol tax is a "legitimate call. I believe the managers of the economy will have to consider it…The taxes on petroleum, if we as a country will come to a consensus that, look, reduce it significantly; then we have to expect a commensurate reduction in our development”.
