National Youth Authority Holds Consultation Meeting To Review Its National Youth Policy

The National Youth Authority in consultation with Ministry of Youth and Sport is in the process of reviewing the National Youth Policy (NYP) to engage stakeholders in detailed plans and procedures for youth development.

As a result, the Authority held a public consultation on Monday 15th October, 2018 at Accra, Erata Hotel under the theme: “Towards An Empowered Youth, Impacting Positively On National Development” which is also to provide guidance for all youth development related issues.

The meeting engaged stakeholders especially women for their input regarding key areas of the NYP which include policy content, objective achievement and stakeholder requirements, to guide and inform the Ministry of Youth and Sports among others.

According to the National Youth Authority CEO  Mr. Emmanuel Sin-Nyet Asigri, "the policy in its current form is not fit for purpose. There is the need to align the existing policy with government’s development agenda as well as other relevant international development protocols and frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063 of the African Union".

The data in the existing policy was based on the 2000 population and housing census by the Ghana statistical service. There is therefore the need to capture recent date using the 2010 population and housing census to reflect current trends. Considering the dynamic nature of society, particularly, issues related to the youth, there is the need for a review in order to respond to the challenging needs and emerging issues affecting youth development such as gender and youth with disabilities. These are not covered by the existing policy, thus, the need for disability mainstreaming in the revised Youth Policy.

Based on provisions of this policy, the government has engaged the youth and other stakeholders in meaningful partnership to develop appropriate interventions and services for youth empowerment and development", he further stressed.

Mr. Sin-Nyet Asigri also said there will be several consultations across the country as they aim for maximum involvement from their stakeholders.

"So far preliminary stakeholders engagements paper for the review developed, retreats organized to evaluate the exiting youth policy to identify gaps and generate a gap analysis report. The gap analysis report has been completed and widely disseminated to inform and elicit inputs.

When the review of the current policy is complete and an implementation plan developed, we can then have a sigh of relief and be sure that we now have a workable, promising and innovative policy document that provides youth-led and youth-centered solutions to current and future challenges".
