I Would Have Been A Footballer Kwaisey Pee

If he had not defied his fathers wishes, Ghanaians contemporary highlife silky-voiced singer, Kwaisey Pee, may be part of the twenty-three men squad who are representing Ghana at the on-going African Cup of Nations in Angola. The musician who has four solid music albums to his credit said his father was not a fan of his music dream when he was very young. Rather, he said the old-boy wanted him to become a footballer and as such lied it whenever he went out there to play football. Whenever I left message for him that Im going to play football, he feels happy. There was a time, I hurt myself when we were playing and while I was in hospital bed, he went to buy me a new football boot to encourage me more. But he told Asempa Fms Entertainment Hall on Saturday that football was his talent, as music was what he was rather interest in. Sounding jovial, Kwaisey said his legs are too tiny to strike to strike or even play defence, saying what his father was choosing for him was obviously a situation of square pegs in round holes. According to him, his father had never come to terms with his choice till a time when he needed help from him (Kwaisey Pee) before he showed signs of liking his career. Kwaisey said he started singing at the age of 16. Known in private life as Akwasi Opoku, his life revolved round playing with various bands like Jewels Ackahs Butterfly Six and Nana Tuffours Sikadwa Band, playing at gigs in different parts the country. He took a trip with his father to the United Kingdom in the late 90s and the experience there made him take music more seriously than before. He released his first album in 2000 and now has four albums to his credit. Every three years, he releases an album. This modernized highlife singer has been likened several ties to the maestro, Kojo Antwi, and he doesnt mind. I think Kojo Antwi is a great man, he says. Its good that they are comparing me to him. I take it as a compliment. Who wouldnt want to be compared to one of the greatest? But at the same time, I would like to be known for; as Kwaisey Pee. From shows in Europe and in the USA, Kwaisey shuttles back and forth Ghana but he said this time, he is staying home, promising he was going to come out with something new this year.
