TOR Sets Up Committee To Probe Fire Outbreak

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Madam Aba Lokko has disclosed that a committee has been set up to probe the fire outbreak that engulfed TOR on Tuesday. According to her, TOR would be able to work efficiently, and that the operations of the company would not be disturbed since tankers would be loaded with fuel products from the Bulk Oil Storage Transport (BOST) which is outside the premises of TOR. Our technical engineers are assessing the extent of damage to the refinery, she said. Speaking to Peace FM on Kokrokoo, she said, fire outbreak was the main hazard that threatens most refineries around the world, but they were always ready to prevent such outbreaks. She added that the Committee to be set up will probe the occurrence of the fire outbreak and recommend ways to prevent such accidents in the near future. Many reasons have been given by some eyewitnesses. Some attributed the spark to the weak lines connecting the main refinery to the loading rack, saying a spillover along the lines could have caused an outbreak at the loading track. However, Madam Aba Lokko assured the public that there would be no fuel shortage as the fire was confined to the loading gantry and did not extend to where the oil is refined. A huge inferno engulfed the loading gantry of the TOR on Tuesday, claiming the life of one worker of the plant and injuring two others. The charred body of 60-year-old, Thomas Ebo Fryer, was conveyed by an ambulance, while the two injured, Humphrey Ahiakpor, 57 and Samuel Okine, 30, are receiving treatment at the Tema General Hospital. Three of the fire loading racks of the refinery and nine trucks got burnt completely. Meanwhile, staff and workers of the refinery have said though they are disturbed about the incident, they were still committed to their work. Dan Fugah, the vice chairman of the senior staff workers union at the TOR, said they were waiting for the committee already set up to bring out its findings. We appreciate the type of work we do, so we try to live with it, he stated, apparently assuring all that the workers would still be dedicated to work freely.
