Editorial: Calm Before The Storm

There can be no doubt that the Tamale Congress of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) passed off peacefully and at the end of it all there were apparent signs of internal cohesion. However, there are still lingering doubts over whether the peace which is prevailing after the congress will hold for a long time. In our view there is only one condition for the sustenance of peace and harmony within the NDCFormer President Jerry John Rawlings has to come to terms with the fact that he is no longer the Head of State and that at least for now, Professor John Evans Atta Mills is in charge. We have come to this conclusion primarily because all the tensions which built up before the congress are traceable to the reluctance of former President Rawlings to bow off the stage. The act in which President Rawlings was the principal actor is over and he has to realize that very quickly to save the NDC and Ghana unnecessary tensions. If former President Rawlings insists on his right to call leaders of the current administration greedy bastards and crooks there cannot be peace and unity in the ranks of the party. Indeed what is happening now may only be he calm before the storm. Somebody should be advising former President Rawlings well.
