Comment: The Church Must Be Up And Doing

Today, we live in a very competitive and unpredictable society, which means that anything which hitherto was unthinkable in now possible. Day in and day out, we read and hear about appalling crimes been committed and we wonder where we are heading towards. Indeed, moral values have over the years been on the decline. Our situation is compounded by the fact that we are still a struggling developing country with many economic problems which compel some people to indulge in social vices. Research has shown that prostitution and theft for example are prevalent not so much because those involved love it, but because they are compelled to do so because of the harsh economic conditions they find themselves in. Though we are not in any way condoning these anti-social vices, far from it, we believe in a better socio-economic environment, people are most likely to lead upright lives. In the midst of falling moral standards; there is one institution that any society would continue to look up to. A body that would unflinchingly uphold high moral and societal values. And that undoubtedly is the church. Ghanaians are generally known to be a very religious people and church attendance at all nooks and cronies of this country attest to this. The aim of the church is to shape societal values and change by preaching the virtues of Christ. Indeed it can be said that the church should be the untarnished image that we all look up to. Unfortunately, however, a lot of vices have crept into some of our churches that we wonder whether we are really safe in what is supposed to be Gods sanctuary on earth. The P&P is disgusted by the behaviours of some so called pastors and Christians whose conduct tend to destroy societal values that upholding the virtues of Christ. We believe the church owes the society a responsibility in uplifting and maintaining moral standards.
