Woman jailed for stealing clothes

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Circuit Court, has convicted a 20-year-old unemployed woman to six months imprisonment for stealing clothes worth GH100 belonging to a seamstress. The items were three half pieces of wax print, a pair of trousers, a pair of sandals and a lady's dressing bag. Anima Tiga pleaded guilty to the charge. Police Chief Inspector Mary Nana Adwoa Affanyi, prosecuting, told the Court presided over by Mr Justice Adjei Frimpong that Ramatu Alhassan, the complainant, resides on the campus of the Asanteman Senior High School in Kumasi, whilst the convict is a resident of Race Course, an area near the school. She said in the early part of December 2009, the complainant met the accused, who claimed she was stranded and that needed a place to spend the night. The Prosecutor said after hearing the pathetic story, the complainant agreed and took the accused to her house to spend the night. The next morning the two went out to town but Anima sneaked back to the house and told the complainant's mother, Madam Hawa Ibrahim that she had been sent by the complainant to come and collect the items for her (complainant). Chief Inspector Affanyi said the woman readily gave them to her but later in the day when the complainant came home, she denied ever sending Anima to come for any items on her behalf. The Prosecutor said Anima since then went into hiding until she was spotted by the complainant at the Race Course on December 24, 2009 and caused her arrest. At the Suame police station, Anima admitted the offence in her caution statement and led the police to retrieve one half piece of the wax prints stolen. She also confessed sending the rest of the items to Seru in the Upper East Region where she comes from.
