Yendi Clashes Leave One Dead, Others Injured

There were violent clashes at Yendi on Thursday leaving one dead and about three others injured.

The incident happened when Sagnari Naa Yakubu Abdulai, Paramount Chief of Sagnarigu Traditional Area, was entering Yendi, and some youth allegedly pelted stones at his convoy, an act which, was retaliated by some members of his convoy.

It quickly resulted in sporadic gunshots leading to the death of a young man, believed to be in his early 30s, while two houses and a shed were also burnt.

Sagnari-Naa Abdulai was arriving at Yendi as part of preparations to begin the funeral of the late Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani (II), in line with the roadmap announced by the Committee of Eminent Chiefs mediating the Dagbon chieftaincy crisis to ensure peace in the area.

The Abudu Royal Family performed the funeral of Yaa Naa Mahamadu Abdulai (IV) from December 14, to December 28, 2018 and it is now the turn of the Andani Royal Family to also perform the funeral of Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani (II) starting from today, January 11, to January 18.

Earlier, the Andani Royal Family raised issues with the continued occupancy of the Mba Dugu’s Palace by the Bolin Lana Abdulai Mahamadu, Regent of the Yaa Naa Mahamadu Abdulai (IV), saying that, until he relocated from the palace, the funeral of Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani (II) would not be performed because the palace played an important role in the performance of the funeral.

However, the Abudu Royal Family said the Bolin Lana, Abdulai Mahamadu would not move an inch from the said palace because the palace did not play any role in the performance of the funeral of a Yaa Naa.

Latest information available to Ghana News Agency indicated that the Andani Royal Family had softened its stance on the demand for the Bolin Lana to relocate from the Mba Dugu’s Palace, and therefore, would proceed with the funeral of Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani (II) from today, January 18.
