Editorial: Its Crucial NPP Gets An Early Congress!

A section of the candidates vying for various national executive positions in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have expressed the opinion that it is necessary that the alleged problems bedeviling the party are solved before the lection of the Flag bearer of the party. For instance, one leading member of the party, who is vying for the post of National Chairman, is of the opinion that the NPP today is like a party that has had an accident, and it is necessary that vehicle be fixed before there can be talk of finding a driver. We at the Daily Searchlight are in absolute disagreement with this opinion, in that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be described as a vehicle that has had an accident. Across the nation, there is a vibrant interest in the NPP and its activities, with people calling for an early congress so that the party can start active campaign work in order to unseat the incompetent Atta Mills government. Again, the NPP has already had a conference to overhaul its structures across the nation with various constitutional amendments that are intended to revamp the structures of the party, and it would therefore be strange to talk about fixing the party, when these processes have already been completed! For millions of Ghanaians, the NPP today holds the only hope of a better life, and we do not think that any campaign of further delaying this hope should be entertained. By all means, this party should move for an early congress, so that the real business of snatching electoral power from the NDC in 2012 can begin!
