Major Mahama: State To Present Sixth Prosecution Witness On February 7

Mr Solomon Sackey, the fifth prosecution in the trial of the alleged murderers of the late Major Maxwell Mahama has said initially he thought he was a suspect when he reported himself to the Police.

Mr Sackey, who spoke through an interpreter in cross-examination told an Accra High Court that he became a prosecution witness after the State ended it’s committal proceedings and he was discharged together with others.

Mr Patrick Anim-Addo, Counsel for Bismarck Abanga and Kwadwo Anima, asked the witness concerning a video recording, whether he had seen the visuals before writing his first statement at the Bogoso Police station but Mr Sackey answered in the negative.

He said the video was shown to him after he finished writing his statement and even that the police doubted him, when he told them he was in the video.

“Were you taken to the Deiso Police station the same day,” Mr Anim-Addo asked but the witness answered in the negative, saying it was the following day.

Mr Anim-Addo pointed to the witness that, he gave two different statements at these police stations but Mr Sackey disagreed.

The Defence Counsel emphasized that it was two separate statements the witness gave to the police and that the statement at Bogoso police station was given without mentioning some of the names of accused persons but at the Deiso Police station, he mentioned the names after watching the video but Mr Sackey disagreed.

Mr Augustine Gyamfi, Defence Counsel for Michael Anim and Emmanuel Badu asked the witness, whether he believed the late Major was an armed robber and the witness answered in the affirmative.

Asked, why he believed the late Major was an armed robber, the witness said at that time there were a lot of criminal activities going on and a few days before the incidence happened, there was an armed robbery attack in the area.

It was on this note that Mr Gyamfi ended his cross-examination with the State to present its sixth prosecution witness at the next adjourned date.

The Court presided over by Justice Mariama Owusu, adjourned the matter to Thursday, February 7, for the continuation of the trial.
