Man Drowns Over 20 Pesewas

A 33-year-old man got drowned when he attempted to retrieve GH20p from a stream for a girl.

The incident happened at Sawaba in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region on Friday.

The deceased, identified as TJ, who is said to be a staunch Muslim, has since been buried according to Islam traditions.

Eyewitnesses said a certain young girl in the area, accidentally dropped her GH20p in the stream.

The young girl informed TJ about her misfortune and asked him to retrieve the coins from the stream.

TJ later dived into the stream to retrieve the money, but got drowned in the process.

Attempts by eyewitnesses at the scene to save TJ’s life proved unsuccessful.

After three hours of fruitless search in the water, some elders in the community were contacted to help find the body.

Sources said libation was eventually poured and few minutes later TJ’s body was retrieved for burial.

Samuel Gyimah, Asokore Mampong National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Coordinator, confirmed the report to the media in Kumasi.

He said TJ tried to help the young girl to retrieve her GH20p from the stream, but lost his life in the process.

According to him, some people in the area helped in the search for TJ’s body for burial.
