EDITORIAL: Bravo Ken Agyapong

One politician whose outbursts on the political scene always elicit divergent response in the country is Honorable Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. There have been instances when his own Party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), never liked what he had said. He spoke his mind on issues and sometimes over does it without fear or favour. Last Monday, Hon Agyapong did something which other politicians and, for that matter, Ghanaians should be proud of and learn a lesson from it. The Assin North MP, who is the owner of the Madina-based Oman FM, called into a ports programme in which the host and the panel were denigrating the government for sending a group of people to Angola in support of the Black Stars. The panel, made up of Nana Okyere Awuruku and Kwaku Owiredu Sarpong Ageorgia, went overboard and chastised the government for sending the fans to Angola. The fact that the fans that were sent to Angola cut across the political persuasion was thrown to the dogs and insults were rained on the government,. When the CEO called into the programme, lots of listeners wondered what was coming because of his penchant to hit hard. However, Hon. Agyapong dazzled listeners, when in plain language, he told the host and the panelist that they were not being sincere and fair to the government with their discussions on the issue. The owner of Oman FM took his time to educate the three young men on the importance of supporting issues that are healthy for the nation, irrespective of their political stands. The gesture by Hon. Agyapong is exactly how the political game should be played, that is giving credit where it is due. It is just not criticizing for its sake, but criticism should always be geared towards promoting the development of the nation and not chastising leaders. Insulting leaders just because there is an opportunity to work with a media organization is not the best, as that does not contribute to the development of democracy in the country. Other owners of media organization should take a cue from what Hon. Agyapong did last Monday and call their workers to order in times when they go overboard.
