Baby Kidnapper Causes Stir In Court

Mawusi Rose Fiaku, aka Michelle, who was arrested for allegedly stealing a one-year-old baby boy from his mother, caused a stir in a circuit court in Takoradi yesterday.

The 42-year-old suspect initially told the packed court that she has a nine-month-old baby at home and was also pregnant.

However, immediately the judge Abena Agyin Doku told Rose Fiaku, a seamstress, that the police would have to conduct a pregnancy test for confirmation before the next adjourned date, the accused person quickly changed her story.

She said, “Please one of the police officers used his leg to hit my stomach which resulted in a miscarriage,” to which the crowd exclaimed spontaneously ‘“Eii! You are lying!”

The suspect, who has been charged with child stealing, was in the dock with her boyfriend, Lawson Lartey, 33, who is facing a charge of abetment.

Rose Fiaku pleaded guilty but Lartey denied any wrongdoing.

The judge subsequently took them into prison custody to reappear on April 5.

The suspect managed to steal the one-year-old baby boy from his mother at about 4:30pm in front of the Market Circle Post Office in Takoradi last Friday.

She initially posed as a customer and reportedly asked the mother to allow her handle her two kids to enable her to serve the customers better.

Fortunately, a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera of some banks in the area captured the woman, who was cuddling the baby as she moved away from the market.
