The University of Education Winneba (UEW) has postponed indefinitely, the mid-semester examinations which were scheduled to begin from April 9.
No reasons were given for the decision contained in a statement issued Thursday by the University Registry, but it is believed to be linked to the closure of the school in March 14 following protests that turned violent.
The academic board is expected to meet on April 8 when the university is set to re-open, to decide on a new date for the mid semester examinations.
The decision to reopen the university was taken based on the “advice and permission” from the Regional Security Council to the Governing Council.
The University was closed down on March 14 following a violent protest on campus last month against the dismissal of their lecturers.
After wide consultations by the Governing Council, it has been announced that students will arrive on campus on Monday for the mid-semester examinations to take place from Tuesday, 9th April, 2019 to Friday, 12th April, 2019.
“The Governing Council further brings to the attention of the Students Representative Council (SRC), the general student body, lecturers and staff of the University that on-campus-resident students will only be allowed into the halls of residence on the two campuses effective Monday April 8, 2019, and not earlier.”
The Governing Council has therefore tasked the university management and the academic board to review the school’s academic calendar to cater for the loss of time and ensure that staff and students work collaboratively to return academic work to normalcy.
A statement from the University council Wednesday also said three principal officers of the school whose dismissal sparked the series of protest last month, have been reinstated.

Professor Ephraim Avea Nsoh, former Upper East Regional Minister and Principal of the College of Languages Education at Ajumako, Dr. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku who is the local President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, a former Alumni President who was representing the alumni on the University Council were dismissed on March 7 for alleged acts of misconduct.
They have been reinstated to their various ranks in the University effective Thursday, 4th April, 2019, the statement signed by Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah said.
