John Boadu Speaks On Disbanding Vigilante Groups

The General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu says the issues of mistrust and lack of confidence in the security agencies in the wake of election violence should be major factors which cannot be ignored in the discussion on disbandment of vigilantism.

According to him, as the two main political parties strive to address the issue of vigilantism in magnitude, they will certainly talk about the mistrust and the kind of confidence the political parties, especially those in opposition have in the security agencies as the forces sometimes stand unconcerned to most of the violence committed against those in opposition.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, the NPP Chief Scribe insisted that political influence comes to bear in the operation of the police during elections making it difficult for them to stamp their authority as officers to take charge of any election violence.

“ . . the person may be doing the wrong thing in front of the police and they cannot do anything about it . . . we will certainly talk about mistrust and the confidence we have in the police and other security agencies; such issue will come up because sometimes our police, whatever reason, they cannot stamp on their mandate and authority as officers to take care of election violence,” he pointed.

He bemoaned that the level of violence and crime associated with elections are no joke, citing the example of Akwatia election which caused a young man called 'Bullet' to lose his three fingers right in front of the police in broad day light without any action taken to arrest the hoodlums.

He mentioned that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made it clear that it has only three organs namely the youth wing, women wing and the Nassara wing; admitting that some groups have been formed outside these organs but they have managed to closed them except a few which are not related to security issue.
