Some communities in Agona Swedru living in fears and panic

Four continuous armed robbery attacks on some communities in Agona Swedru within a week has created panic and fear in the area. Between February 5 and 7, the armed robbers attacked and robbed high profiled personalities including three Catholic Fathers of their belongings and unspecified amount, at Aborenye, Mangoase, Bungalow and Swiss areas of the Municipality,. Mr Kobina Tawiah and Alhaji Awudu Musah, spokesmen for the communities who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), accused the police of doing very little to protect life and property. According to the victims of the robbery attacks, they did not get instant response to emergency calls from the police during the attacks. They appealed to the Agona Swedru District Command to intensify night patrols especially in the newly created suburbs. They noted that most of the streets lights in the Agona Swedru Municipality were not functioning and appealed to the Assembly to rehabilitate them. Superintend Philip Aleawobu, Agona Swedru District Police Commander, when contacted confirmed the armed robbery cases and pointed out that the police are doing their best to fight the menace. He said the patrol team has intensified their patrol duties and urged communities to form watchdog committees to support the police. He said the public should assist the police with the relevant information about the criminals in order to curb the nefarious activities in the area. Mr Felix Jacob Obeng-Forson, Chief Executive of the Agona West Assembly expressed concern about the spate of robbery in the area, but assured the residents that the assembly was doing everything possible to ensure that the security agencies protected life and property. He said the assembly was also making efforts to repair the street lights in the Municipality.
