Depressing Reports . . . Ghana Losing Galamsey Fight?

The hope that various water bodies in the country will revert to its natural clean and pure state was ignited after the media started a campaign against illegal mining popularly known as 'galamsey' which was backed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo put his presidency on the line when he swore to deal with the galamsey canker.

“But it has been said that I should be careful because many of these people voted for me and if I continue this exercise, they would not vote for me. We have a duty to protect it for those who would come after us and if our river bodies are drying up, our landscape is being desecrated. We have a responsibility to say no, we can’t allow this to go on for our own common survival and that of those to come. If we allow that to continue, we are jeopardising our own future,” President Akufo-Addo said at the time.

Operation Vanguard, a joint military and police task force was then formed to bring an end to the menace.

After some months, reports started coming in that some of the water bodies have started clearing up.

However, corruption started setting in after some officials who are supposed to deal with the illegal miners reportedly started collecting bribes for them to continue with their illegal activities.

Peace FM's regional correspondents were dispatched to some of these Galamsey areas in the various regions and filed their reports.
