Pre-Paid Meters Improve ECGs Revenue

Bernard Nyatefe, the Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Western Region, says the introduction of the pre-paid meters has greatly enhanced the companys revenue by about 98 percent. Speaking at a meeting with journalists on Thursday at Takoradi, Mr Nyatefe said over 62,000 pre-paid metres have so far been installed in Takoradi and Sekondi, adding that about 10,000 meters would be installed in the Tarkwa Municipality by the end of this year. We will also extend our pre-paid installation works to Axim, Bibiani, Half-Assini, Bogoso, Enchi, Asankragwa and Juaboso Districts. He however indicated that ECG needed more transformers to enable it extend services to customers in other parts of the region, disclosing that the current active customer population in the region was about 181,000. He said as part of efforts to improve the companys services and to restore confidence in its customers in the region, ECG was installing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System near the Takoradi cemetery to enable it locate and rectify faults promptly during power outages. He also mentioned that cable theft by some unscrupulous persons was rampant in the region, adding that this caused ECG a whopping GH67,000 in 2008 and 2009. Mr. Nyatefe expressed concern about an alleged attack on some officials of the ECG in 2009 and early parts of this year, noting, They were only carrying out their official duties in these communities. He called on traditional rulers, opinion leaders and assembly members to ensure the safety of ECG officials.
