Newmont Guard Found Dead In Mining Pit

A SECURITY guard of Protea Coin Group Limited, Stephen Amankwa who was providing security duties for Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, Ahafo Mines and went missing last Thursday after being attacked by illegal miners has been found dead in one of the company’s mining pits.

The deceased together with four others  Vincent Boateng, Kwabena Boateng, Zachariah Ibrahim, and Reuben Adu-Gyamfi were said be on their normal security patrol duties on one of the Newmont mine sites when they were allegedly attacked by illegal miners and inflicted with cutlass wounds at about 2:55 am  last Friday.

Four of them managed to escape but Amankwa went missing.

A search party including the police at Kenyasi, some community members, Newmont Ahafo Mines workers and the Protea Coin group later found the lifeless body of Amankwa in one of the company’s mine pits called Apensu that is said to have been left uncovered.

The police are trying to ascertain whether Amankwa was killed by his attackers and later dumped in the pit or if he fell into it himself while trying to escape.

Regional Police spokesman, Chief Inspector Kinsley Augustine Oppong confirmed the sad incident to DAILY GUIDE and said they were doing everything possible to unravel the circumstance surrounding the death.

The mining company also in a statement confirmed the death of one of their ‘Goldcorp’ and said they were assisting the police in their investigations to help find out how he died.

Information gathered by Daily Guide indicated that one of the victims who was seriously wounded is currently on admission at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
