Trotro Fares To Go up

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has hinted at plans to increase public transport fares following the recent hike in fuel prices.

According to the union, this has become necessary to enable its members stay afloat.

Prices of petroleum products went up by some 3.7 per cent on Monday after the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) directed Oil Marketing Companies to begin applying the revised Energy Sector Levies.

Speaking to Class News, the Greater Accra Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Mr Abbas Ibrahim Moro, said the new transport fares will soon be made public after engagements with the Transport Ministry.

According to him, commercial drivers use, at least, eight gallons of fuel per day, explaining that with the increase of about 90 pesewas in the price of fuel per gallon, they will be operating at a loss if transport fares are not adjusted upward.
