Editorial: Stop These Hooligans

A small group of hooligans claiming to be supporters of former President Jerry John Rawlings are on the loose. Last Saturday, they stormed the premises of Asempa F.m., a local radio station as part of their crazy mission to terrorize all those who disagree with the former President. These hooligans claimed that they were looking for Alhaji Bature, an outspoken talk show host and the Editor of The Insight to teach them a lesson. Some sources have said that it is this same band of hooligans who raided the premises to Top Radio in an attempt to lynch a panelist on a discussion programme. There can be no doubt that the principal objective of the hooligans is to subvert the right of free expression and to return Ghana once more to the dark days of the culture of silence. The Insight insists that the Government and the security services have a duty to protect all citizens irrespective of their political affiliation from unwarranted attacks. No former President or citizen is above criticisms and any attempt to stifle free expression must be seen as an affront to the effort to nurture democratic practice in Ghana. We call on the relevant authorities to take immediate action to stop the hooligans.
