Eight Regional athletic records, five in the women's division and three in the men's event were broken at the end of the two-day Ashanti Region Schools and Colleges Super-Zonal Athletics competition held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Friday. William Akuka Awunime of Prempeh College produced an outstanding performance to set new records in the 1,500 and 5,000 metre races as well as in the triple jump event. He ran the 1,500 metre race in a time of 4 minutes 01.1 seconds and the 5,000 metres in 15 minutes 17.0 seconds to erase the old record for the 1,500 metres stood at 4 minutes 03.7 seconds and that of 5,000 was 15 minutes 26.5 seconds which were all set by him in 2009. Awunime also jumped 15.01 metres in the triple jump to break the 14.5 metres record which stood in the name of Martin Etsey of the Kumasi T.I. Ahmadiyya Secondary. Naomi Serwaah of Wesley Girls High School set a new record of 10 minutes 16.7 seconds in the 3,000 metre race. The old record of 10 mins 33.9secs was set by Agnes Bayor of Dompoase Senior High School (SHS) in 2008. Elizabeth Dadzie of Kumasi T.I. Ahmadiyya also set two new records in the long jump and triple jump. She broke the record of 5.44 metres in the long jump event set in 2009 by Gloria Konadu of Saint Monica's SHS with a new leap of 5.52 metres. She also jumped 10.92 metres in the triple jump event to cancel the old record of 10.76 metres set by Elizabeth Owusuah of Kenyase SDA SHS in 2008. Diana Tetteh also of T.I Amass set a new record of 14mins 07.secs in the 100 metres hurdles to cancel the old record of 15mins 03secs set by Dorcas Gyimah of Konongo Odumase SHS in one of the zonal meetings this year. Lydia Nuamah of New Edubiase also leapt to a height of 1.56 metres in the high jump to break the existing record of 1.55 metres in the name Mary Salah of Yaa Asantewaa SHS set in 2002.
