The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has obtained a 65-million Euro loan from the French government to extend and improve electricity supply to Tema and its environs.
The project, which will involve the introduction of more transformers, will cover Ashaiman, Afienya, Mataheko, Dawenya and Klagen among other areas.
Speaking at a forum on Thursday, Mr Delali Oklu, acting Director of ECG, Tema regional, said the successful implementation of the project would resolve the problem of low voltage experienced by customers in these areas.
He attributed the low voltage to the fact that most of the areas were located far from existing transformers. Mr Oklu said the high customer population growth of 9.8per cent annually far outpaced the rate of service delivery and the company was doing its best to bridge the gap.
The forum is an annual programme organised by the company to sensitise customers on planned projects by the ECG and to elicit their views on the company�s performance.
Mr Oklu said the company was also replacing old underground cables and obsolete transformers in Communities One, Two, Three, Four and Seven to avert the problem of frequent power cuts due to faulty cabling.
Mr Oklu said the introduction of prepared metering had enabled the company to achieve 95 per cent revenue collection and there were plans to realize 98 per cent by the end of the year with the expansion of the facility to cover the whole region.
He appealed to customers to appreciate the need to increase tariffs since the current rates did not allow the company to meet the high supply demand.
