Rapper Sarkodie has been made an ambassador for government’s ‘Year of Return’ initiative, which seeks to encourage Africans living in the Diaspora to return home to their roots.
The announcement of the rapper’s ambassadorial role was made at a Creative Industry Forum put together by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture at the National Theatre in Accra. The Forum, which is under the theme ‘Reviving Ghana’s creative industry’ brought together stakeholders and players within the creative arts industry in Ghana to deliberate and share ideas on how to further boost the industry.
Speaking at the Forum, sector minister Barbara Oteng Gyasi commended Sarkodie for his contribution towards the creative arts industry and his promotion of the ‘Year of Return’ initiative. “Today, we will recognise Sarkodie for projecting Ghana and for what he has done in the industry, and therefore today, we make him an ambassador for the Year of Return,” Barbara Oteng Gyasi announced.
While picking his BET Hip Hop Awards a few weeks ago in the United States, Sarkodie capitalized on the opportunity to call on all the world to take a trip to Africa for a memorable experience. “This year is the ‘Year of Return’, and I will urge each and every one of you here to take a trip back home.
“…It’s going down in Ghana, so if you are coming to Africa, choose Ghana,” the rapper said after receiving his award.
It is on the back of this and other moves by the rapper that the ministry decided to make him an ambassador for the Year of Return. Hundreds of Africans living across the globe are expected back home throughout the year to see the beautiful tourist sites and historical places in Ghana as they connect with their roots.
