The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says the practice of peeling or bleaching the skin to look lighter is injurious, unhealthy and had the potential of causing skin cancer and other diseases.

The FDA says it has noted with concern a video circulating on social media where an individual has been placed in a tub with a liquid substance bubbling around the body thereby providing instant whitening by a peeling effect of the outer skin layer.

A statement signed by its Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Delese A. A Darko in Accra said the authority could not confirm the liquid substance being used in the said video.

However, the FDA said, such practice would be fatal.

According to the FDA, although the narration in the video suggested that the practice was taking place in Nigeria, it cautioned the public against indulging in such practices.

“The FDA wished to further emphasise that the well-being of the general public is its priority and therefore, its activities are designed to provide continuous assurance of the safety of all food, medicines, cosmetics, household chemical substance and medical device.
