President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has performed a ground-breaking ceremony for work to commence on Ghana’s first creative arts Senior High School (SHS) at Kwadaso in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The project, being executed by Messrs. Golden Mainland Engineering Ghana Limited, reinforces the government’s deliberate effort to create the platform and avenue for more creative arts talents to be harnessed.
The President emphasised that the creative arts sector, encompassing music, dance, drama, literature, amongst others, had huge prospects in creating jobs and wealth for the citizenry, especially the youth.
“Unleashing the sense of creativity, enterprise and innovation of our youth by granting them access to education and skills training constitutes a powerful tool to the economic development of our country,” he observed.
Consequently, the government was giving serious consideration to the Creative Arts Industry Bill - to see to its passage into law.
President Akufo-Addo said when that was done, the Act would lead to the establishment of a Creative Arts Fund to help provide funding to develop and modernise the sector.
It would also harmonise the structure and activities of the various sectors under the creative arts industry for accelerated growth.
The President said the creative arts SHS concept would be replicated in other parts of the country to give access to the youth to such specialised education in order to improve their skills in the creative arts.
Ms. Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, said the youth ought to take interest in the creative arts - taking up professions in this area since it was one of the fastest-growing sectors of the global economy.
Present at the ceremony were a host of artiste, movie and music producers, as well as key stakeholders in the creative arts industry.
