Saint Ann's Senior High School at Nkontrodo in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central Region, put up a brilliant performance to become winners of a quiz to mark the 53rd Independence Anniversary. With 26 points, it received a cash prize of GH250.00 plus a biography of the first President of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah. Elmina Model JHS came second with 21 points with Bantama M/A bagging 20 points to place third. They also had cash of GH200.00 and GH150.00, respectively, and a book each, on the biography of Dr Nkrumah. In all, 13 schools took part in the competition organised, on Friday, by Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, the 2008 Presidential Candidate of the Convention Peoples' Party (CPP) to encourage the youth to learn and appreciate the history of the nation's independence. Mrs Monica York School was adjudged the fourth while Hollywood and Methodist JHS "A" respectively, took the fifth and sixth positions. Some of the participating schools were Saint Paul's, Christ Care, Bronyibima M/A, Dr Baffoe Anglican and Methodists "B" JHS. The quiz master, Mr Dela Kissieh, a presenter at Ahomka FM at Elmina, took participants through questions on the pre and post independence era, the achievements of Dr Nkrumah and current affairs. It was sponsored by the Gold Coast Securities, the First National Bank and the Coconut Grove Hotels and all the participants received some cash donations. Dr Nduom said the achievement of independence was significant and that it was important for the youth to know and appreciate the role Dr. Nkrumah and his compatriots played towards its attainment. He noted that those who fought so hard for the country should be recognized and honoured by the nation and recalled the many schools, projects and other valuable acts Dr Nkrumah undertook that have been of immense benefit to Ghana. Dr Nduom said the CPP was proud to be associated with the attainment of independence and added that this was not about politics but historical facts. He urged the youth to be conversant with the country's history and endeavour to draw lessons from it to serve as inspiration for them to learn harder and aspire to attain greater heights.
