Odoben celebrates independence anniversary after four years

School children in and around Odoben who had celebrated independence anniversaries over the past four years as a result of a chieftaincy dispute last Saturday celebrated the 53rd celebration of Ghana's Independence. This became possible following a directive by the President John Atta Mills to the District Chief Executive for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, Mrs Georgina Nkrumah-Aboah, to ensure that school children in the area fully participated in the celebration this year. Mrs Nkrumah-Aboah told the GNA that the government made it possible for the children in area to take part in the celebration by providing adequate security because the rights of the children could not be denied as a result of chieftaincy. She said 21 military personnel from 64 Battalion Infantry in Accra were dispatched to Odoben to assist the police to maintain law and order. During the celebration of the anniversary in 2006, one of the factions in the chieftaincy dispute fired a gun that injured some school children.
