Editorial: Commending The Okyehene

The Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has reaffirmed his resolve to halt illegal small-scale mining in the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area with a call for the arrest and prosecution of any traditional ruler in the area suspected to be promoting the practice. According to him, any chief who would be found to have collected money and given out land to the illegal miners to operate in the area should be made to face the full rigors of the law without fear of favour! The Okyehenes admonition comes in the wake of the tragic drowning of two young children at Akyem Abuakwa after they fell into a pit created by illegal miners. The Daily Searchlight would like to commend the Okyehene for taking this very proactive stance in the fight against illegal mining, which has become a major scourge in our society! Over the years, illegal mining has caused a lot of damage to the land and environment in our rural areas, but it seemed that many leading figures had turned a blind eye on this canker, until the tragic death of the two young children. We therefore throw our fullest backing to the call by the Okyehene, and we wish to add that the police should begin their fight against illegal mining by tracing the miscreants who created the set of circumstances leading to the deaths of the two children at Kyebi. By all means, let us find the people who dug the hole. Let us find the land owners. Let us find the person who gave the miners the right to dig, and let ask the District Chief Executive and the Police Commander for the area the depth of their knowledge about this tragedy! It is only by doing this that we can find some justice for the two fine young children who were needlessly killed!
