Swap Faulty BVRs For New Ones If . . . - IPRANR Rubbishes EC's Claims For New Register

The Inter-Party Resistance Against Compilation of New Voters Register says the Electoral Commission(EC) is going to waste over 800 million Ghana Cedis of taxpayers money on the compilation of a new voters' register.

According to them, this renders the EC's argument of saving the country money with the compilation of the new voters' register false.

Addressing the press at a briefing today(Monday) on why the EC does not need a new voters register, IT director of the National Democratic Congress, Mr. Osei Kwame Griffiths explained that all explanations by the EC with respect to the BVR are false.

"If you think the BVRs are obsolete and cannot function properly for the 2020 general elections, why don’t you swap them for new ones when the manufacturer is even ready to do so," he rhetorically asked.

"It will also interest you to note that the EC has even spent a total of $ 333,500 to train its workers on the so-called obsolete machines," he added.

He added that the current register has delivered five (5) successful elections so what prevents the Electoral Commission from using the same old register to conduct this year’s general elections.

In a presentation titled: Understanding Why Ghana Doesn't Need a New Voters Register for 2020, the IT Director of the NDC, Mr. Osei Kwame Griffiths said none of the challenges suggested by the EC undermines the credibility of the current voter's register.

He said even though claims by the EC that some of the current mobile registration workstations were faulty were somewhat true, the workstation can be replaced at a far lower cost as compared to replacing the entire register.
