NDC, Other Opposition Parties Can’t Impose Their Will On Electoral Commission – A/R Chief Imam

The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheik Abdul Mumin Harun, has stated that arguments advanced by the Interparty Resistance Against New Register (IPRAN) against the Electoral Commission’s decision to compile new voters register are “not cogent enough” to force the EC to back down on its decision.

According to the Chief Imam, it appears the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Register is on a mission to enforce their will on the Electoral Commission which he opined is not right.

Sheikh Abdul Mumin said that it is about time that Ghanaians rise up and rebuke politicians without fear or favour if they are going wayward.

Speaking at the 11th  Annual Ashanti Regional Conference of Federation of Muslim Women Association in Kumasi over the weekend, Sheikh Abdul Mumin stressed, "if politicians are going wayward, we will tell them to their face that what they are doing can harm the nation.”

The Chief Imam cannot understand why there has been fierce opposition to the EC’s decision to compile a new voters’ register after establishing some infractions with the current register which he believes can mar the smooth administration of elections in the country.

He is, therefore, calling on the NDC, PNC and other political parties opposing the new register to back down on their resistance in order for the EC to roll out measures they believe can ensure free and fair elections.

“Somebody has been given a job and has realized the tools and equipment used in the line of duty are faulty and won’t help them in their work, if the person has decided to change the machines, let the person do it. That entrenched position that the Commission won’t be allowed to change the register but must be forced to use the faulty machines {is not right}. If the EC uses the faulty machines and they affect the elections, it will be a more serious issue,” Sheikh Abdul Mumin Harun told the gathering.

He continued that “the EC must be allowed to compile a new register and procure new machines so that the outcome of the elections will be acceptable to all. Those who are forcing their will on the EC by opposing the EC, won’t help with the peace of the country.”
