It's Ridiculous To CompareĀ 2012 Voter Registration With 2020 Registration - Ras Mubarak

Member of Parliament(MP) for Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak, has chided those comparing the 2012 new voter registration, especially the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) with the 2020 new compilation as same exercise.

According to him, the excuse given by those calling for the compilation of a new register with reference to the 2012 new voter register failed to mention that the processes for the procurement of the equipment was done in 2011 and not the same year of the election as it is happening now.

He said prior to the 2012 new registration, there had been a census in 2010 to rely on a data for the new voter’s register but the situation is different in 2020 as the EC is yet to procure the equipment for the registration exercise and also without a data as there has not been any census yet in 2020.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Ras Mubarak, however, described it as ridiculous the attempt by people to equate the new registration in 2012 to the 2020 new registration that the current Electoral Commission (EC) wants to embark on.

“It is ridiculous to compare the 2012 registration with the 2020 registration . . . we had done a national population census in 2010 and so there was a data to lean on for the 2012 registration, but with this, we are now going to do the census,” he argued.

He feared that instances, where people are unable to register due to the Electoral Commission’s own lapses, incompetence and sheer refusal to listen to some section of Ghanaians, will bring chaos in the election.

He, however, gave a classic example that the month of April earmarked for the new register will not be favorable for Ghanaian farmers as it is the month that farmers in the country do farm work.

He again mentioned that the country is likely to experience rainfall in the month of April, making the new registration exercise difficult to execute.

“It is a national exercise and it should be done in a manner that eases the burden of everybody,” Ras Mubarak lamented on Okay FM.
