The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding a 20% reduction in fuel prices from government.

The opposition party warns that failure on the part of the current government to heed to their request will result in the Akufo-Addo government facing their wrath.

According to the NDC, the New Patriotic Party, when in opposition, promised to reduce fuel prices if voted into power, but have reneged on their word.

Speaking on Okay FM's Ade Akye Abia program, National Communications Officer for the party, Sammy Gyamfi, said they will be a force to hit the streets to back their demands since other countries have announced drastic cut-downs in fuel prices..

"In as much as the inaptitude of the Akufo Addo government has caused them much failure, the reduction of fuel prices is something that they can do because the leading producers of crude have given them the chance. Failure to do so shows how gross incompetent they are in managing the affairs of this country.

"Other country’s like the United States have reduced their fuel prices drastically so what are we waiting for as a country?

"Just as they promised to reduce fuel prices when they were campaigning for power, this the opportunity for them to renew their pledge to the people of Ghana," he said. 

In line with the automatic price adjustment formula, the government through the National Petroleum Authority has a duty to ensure a commensurate reduction in the pump prices of fuel in the country.

This reduction, according to the opposition party, must be commensurate with the windfall arising from a drop in the international market price of crude oil and the relative stability of the Ghana cedi in the last two (2) months.

"For the avoidance of doubt, we are expecting a drastic reduction commensurate with the significant reduction in the price of Brent crude on the global market, which in our view should be nothing less than a 20% reduction in the pump prices of fuel.

"We believe that this reduction will bring down the price of fuel from the current exorbitant GHS24 per gallon to GHS19 will go a long way to ameliorate the sufferings of Ghanaians," he added.
